How to Create a Virtual Machine in VirtualBox for RHEL Installation

VirtualBox provides a simple and effective way to create a virtual machine (VM) that allows you to install different types of guest operating systems on your Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, or Solaris host machines. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of creating a VM in VirtualBox for installing RHEL 6.6 on MAC OS X 10.11, El Capitan.

To start, launch VirtualBox and click on 'New' in the top pane to create a new virtual machine. 'Virtual Box OS X'

The first step is to choose the type of operating system you want to install. For this example, we will be installing RHEL 6.6, so select 'Linux' as the type and 'Red Hat (64-bit)' as the version.

Next, give a name to your virtual machine and specify the memory size (RAM) that you want to assign to it. As we are going to install a 64-bit operating system, ensure that you allocate at least 1GB of RAM to your VM if you plan to install Oracle 11g Database on RHEL.

Now, choose the folder or mount point where you want to create your virtual hard disk file. This will be the location where your VM's virtual hard disk file will be stored.

You have two options for allocating space for your virtual hard disk: fixed size and dynamically allocated. If you choose fixed size, VirtualBox will immediately consume 20GB of space on your host machine during VM creation. On the other hand, if you choose dynamically allocated, the space will be allocated as needed by the guest OS.

For this example, we recommend choosing dynamically allocated to ensure that your virtual hard disk file is not consumed too quickly. In the Storage on physical hard disk selection window, select 'Dynamically allocated' option.

If you do not want to use this virtual hard disk image with any other virtualization software, proceed with the default selection, which is VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image).

Finally, click on 'Create virtual hard disk now' and follow the prompts to complete the creation of your VM. You can now start the installation process for RHEL 6.6.

By following these steps, you will be able to create a virtual machine in VirtualBox that is compatible with MAC OS X 10.11, El Capitan, allowing you to install RHEL 6.6 and other supported guest operating systems on your host machine.
